General Description:
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervises employees and assigns tasks to best utilize the personnel assigned to the section. Promotes department efficiency. Advises staff when decision-making is required.
- Monitors quality control, maintenance, and test results for the section in cooperation with the Quality Control Coordinator. Oversees specimen identification, quality, analysis, and reporting of laboratory tests within the established time frames. Maintains all records as necessary to be in compliance with the accredited agencies.
- Responsible for hiring, education, training, and annual performance evaluations for employees within the section including competency testing and remedial training. Monitors time and attendance, section productivity and oversees sections staffing. Participates in the disciplinary process when indicated.
- Oversees inventory, establishes ordering protocol, maintains budget control and cost containment, and justifies the FTE and Capital Equipment budget.
- Researches and develops new tests, procedures, and analyzers. Stays current with technology. Provides all aspects of Diagnostic Laboratory Procedures based on established standards. Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice as appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Has the ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of the patients’ needs and has knowledge of age specific reference ranges. The employee will demonstrate competence by performing and resulting laboratory tests using the appropriate age specific procedures.
- Establishes and maintains procedure protocol and policy for the section.
- Develops operational techniques when new methods or instructions are instituted and writes procedures in compliance with accreditation agency standards. Assures all procedures are updated and reviewed annually.
- Attends required in-service and meetings including interdepartmental and intra departmental. Interacts regularly with medical and professional personnel.
- Responsible for set up, revision, and training of Meditech computer related information for the section.
- Fulfills all duties of the technical staff in the section as needed.
- Acts as the Tech in Charge of the laboratory on a rotating schedule and as directed in the absence of the Administrative Director and Operations Manager.
- Must know and follow all departmental and hospital policies / procedures
- Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
- Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area
Formal Education:
- Associate's Degree or other Two Year College equivalent required. Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory / medical technology science strongly preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience.
- State of Florida Medical Technologist License in all laboratory areas of supervision required
- ASCP Certification preferred.
