General Description:
Under the general supervision of the supervisor of IR or designee of Interventional Radiology and the Radiologist or attending Physician, provides nursing care to patients who are receiving interdepartmental exams or interventional exams. Provides appropriate patient/family members education of procedures. Assists in the education of Diagnostic Imaging staff and cross- train’s additional nursing staff as needed in the Interventional Radiology department. Performs on-call coverage as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides all aspects of therapeutic/diagnostic nursing care based on established standards. Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of nursing practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served evidenced by: The ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs; a knowledge of growth and development; and understanding of how to compensate nursing care.
- Assists in the performance of all Interventional Radiology procedures throughout the Radiology department, including assessing the patient’s status before, during and immediately post procedure. Administers medications as directed by the radiologist or attending physician orders by following established protocol based on the knowledge of physiological cause and effect and drug interaction.
- Checks monitoring equipment prior to use and monitors EKG and vital signs as appropriate for each procedure, alerting physician to changes in patient’s status.
- Educates patient/family/significant others and nursing staff on interventional procedures giving pre/post instructions including appropriate protocol for dressing changes associated with various types of drainage tubes and /or potential problems. Obtains patients health history prior to procedure providing documentation of this process.
- Documents and communicates patient status, treatment, and outcome to nursing units and physicians both verbally and on designated forms utilizing the nursing process to create a permanent record consistent with established hospital policy and procedure.
- Participates in on-call coverage for Interventional procedures within the diagnostic imaging department.
- Assists in ongoing instruction and evaluation of staff to upgrade their knowledge and performance skills in CPR, infection control, safety, and training for contrast injection certification.
- Places urinary catheters, start and maintains I.V.’s, changes dressings and special appliances as needed while patient is in the department. Assists in training diagnostic staff on insertion of urinary catheters, I.V. insertion skills and all other advanced training.
- Responds to the needs of critically ill patients while in the department, including the care of patients with an allergic reaction to contrast as directed by the radiologist or attending physician.
- Responsible for understanding, supporting, reviewing, and meeting all guidelines set by the hospital in departmental policy and procedures. Assists in departmental quality improvement programs.
- Assists in the operation and maintenance of sterile and nonsterile equipment and supplies utilized in all interventional procedures. Assists in maintaining drug inventory and acknowledges Pyxis usage.
- Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as pertain to the work area.
- Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Formal Education:
- Associate’s Degree, ASN or other Two Year college equivalent required.
Work Experience:
- 2 years to 3 years as a RN preferred; knowledge as a radiology RN preferred.
Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
- State of Florida RN License required
- BLS through the American Heart Association required
- ACLS through the American Heart Association required
